Why immigration makes Canada stronger: A pastor’s perspective

Brent Miller, a pastor at the Cornerstone Neighbourhood Church, is a volunteer at ISSofBC and a life-long supporter of immigration in Canada. As Brent explains, immigration is part of his own family history, and he sees the benefits of diversity every day through his community work in Maple Ridge.

Here’s his story:

“Canada has always been shaped by immigration. My own family’s story stretches back centuries — from German refugees arriving in New York in 1710 to homesteaders breaking land in Saskatchewan in 1908. These ancestors displayed grit, faith, and a love for the land and sea. Today, those values still guide me.

A personal connection

What would Canada be without immigration? Hard to imagine. Immigration enriches our culture — from food to festivals — and helps us resist isolation. I’ve learned so much by interacting with newcomers: savouring Persian tea, enjoying Vietnamese pho, and shopping at the Turkish deli. These experiences make our communities vibrant and connected.

Reflecting on identity

The most important immigrant in my life is my wife. She came to Canada as a teenager, mastered both official languages, and embraced Canadian values while treasuring her heritage.

“Her story reminds me that immigration isn’t about losing identity – it’s about weaving new threads into Canada’s tapestry.”

Brent’s message to the undecided

To those who worry newcomers might change Canada too much or take opportunities away: isolation happens when welcome is missing. The antidote is hospitality — or as the Greek word philoxenos says, “love for strangers.”

My life is richer because of this love. I’ll never forget when a newcomer told me, after five years in Canada, that ours was the first Canadian home she’d been invited into. That’s a loss for both sides.”

Our call to action

Immigration strengthens Canada economically, socially, and culturally. It fuels innovation, fills critical jobs, and brings fresh ideas. It also challenges us to grow and to see beyond our habits and traditions.

Now it’s your turn. Make your voice heard. Support policies and programs that welcome newcomers. Together, we can build a Canada that thrives. A Canada that reflects the best of who we are and who we can become.
