Amir, a newcomer to British Columbia, was eager to find a job in the tourism sector. He had strong people skills, which are essential in the Tourism and Hospitality industry, but like many new immigrants, he needed support to understand the local job market. Through the Gateway to Tourism and Hospitality program, Amir received guidance and connections that helped him navigate his job search. The program provided him with the opportunity to conduct an informational interview with a contact in a local travel agency.

During the interview, Amir’s thoughtful questions and positive attitude left a lasting impression on the agency representative. The contact was so impressed that they encouraged Amir to apply for an open position within the company. Excited by this opportunity, Amir quickly reached out to his case manager and the employer relations specialist at the Gateway program. Together, they helped Amir prepare for the interview process, offering him the support and confidence he needed.

Following a successful interview, Amir was offered a part-time position at the travel agency. He was thrilled, not only for securing a job but also for the opportunity to start building his career in British Columbia’s tourism industry. Amir was grateful for the Gateway team’s support in helping him make the right connections and get his foot in the door.

One of the key factors in Amir’s success was his openness to starting in an entry-level role. He understood that this position was the first step in building a rewarding career in Tourism and Hospitality. With the Gateway program’s support, Amir turned a single conversation into a job offer, setting the foundation for his professional journey in his new home.
