For many newcomers, football is more than a game. It can be a way to connect, build friendships, practice language, and feel part of a new community.

As Vancouver prepares to welcome fans from around the world, we are sharing practical information about the tournament, where to watch, how to get around, and stories that show how football can create belonging.

More than a game: Dacious Richardson’s story

UNHCR Canada recently shared the story of Dacious Richardson, who came to Vancouver as a refugee after fleeing civil war in Liberia. For Dacious, football became a bridge to friendship, confidence, and belonging. Years later, he turned that connection into action by starting a free soccer tournament for refugee youth with a $500 grant, which eventually grew into Rise Above Reality Expectation, a nonprofit supporting youth through sport, mentorship, and personal development.

ISSofBC also shared the story of Jose Eduardo Velasquez Ochoa, who came to Vancouver from Ecuador at 19. A former goalkeeper, Jose says football taught him discipline, patience, and how to stay focused under pressure — lessons that continue to guide him as he builds his future in Canada.

As Vancouver prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026, these stories remind us that football is more than a game. It can create belonging, strengthen confidence, and inspire young people to keep moving toward their goals.
