ISSofBC New Westminster – Burnaby now has space for newcomer youth to learn, share and grow among their peers.
The New Westminster – Burnaby Youth Hub opened its doors yesterday with staff hosting a community event to showcase the space and introduce programs available for youth to help them develop skills and meet their peers living in the area.
“This is a really a good opportunity to increase our services to ensure youth do not feel isolated in the community and get the support they deserve,” said Chaplain Duku, New Westminster Settlement Program Manager during the open house.
One program offered at ISSofBC New Westminster – Burnaby is MY (Multicultural Youth) Circle aimed at building leadership skills youth can use to become community leaders and facilitators to support other newcomers.
Two MY Circle youth facilitators, Fatemeh Kiannjed originally from Iran and Farooq Al-Sajee originally from Iraq, spoke during the event thanking staff for the opportunity to connect with their peers to face challenges in adapting to a new life in Canada.
In addition, the open house included tours, games, food and a special blessing from Squamish Nation Elder Sam George.
ISSofBC New Westminster – Burnaby Youth Hub is open for drop ins 9am – 4:30pm Monday to Saturday at Royal City Centre – 280-610 Sixth Street.
