ISSofBC newcomer youth clients took action against discrimination developing an awareness video and hosting a public forum at ISSofBC Welcome Centre September 25 as part of their community project with InterAction – Newcomer Youth Civic Engagement Program.
InterAction is funded by Heritage Canada and currently runs in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Toronto. Program topics include indigenous history/community, volunteerism, youth rights and activism aimed at offering newcomer youth an opportunity to be leaders in their communities and tackle issues that affect them.
This summer 15 youth from eight countries participated in the first cohort of the program collectively deciding to host a film screening and panel discussion on systematic discrimination for their community project.
“The group of diverse youth were able to speak up and find the strength to voice their experiences and share their insights on discrimination with the general Canadian public. The film they made also received excellent feedback in terms of its cinematography and the symbolism it portrayed,” said Ajlin Mehmedi, Site Manager for the ISSofBC Welcome Centre Youth Hub.
InterAction includes 25 hours of leadership training, a community project component, and a national youth conference in Winnipeg scheduled for March 2019.
