From current BC tech trends to shifting job search strategies, ISSofBC – Vancouver Public Library Technology Together: Career Resilience for BC Newcomers conference yesterday provided insights on advancing career growth in BC’s Tech sector despite the economic challenges caused by the pandemic.
During 30 virtual workshops and panel discussions, 150 internationally-trained professionals learned what employers are looking for in the workforce, built industry related networks and gained knowledge on BC’s growing tech industry. Participants also had an opportunity to connect with other professionals who are job searching, helping to reduce the sense of isolation during the pandemic.
“I thought I am the only one who is struggling job hunting, but this event tells me I am not alone,” said one participant.
Panel discussions included topics such as what employers want in 2021, virtual networking and ways to build skills during COVID-19. Other activities included “Networking with Curiosity” from the Skilled Immigrant InfoCentre and “Linking Lunches” where participants text chatted and connected through LinkedIn. RBC also provided a “Your Brand Matters” workshop for 18-29 year-old Tech job seekers.
