Stories of Learning and Hope

Volunteer of the Month – Jacqueline Morales

For April 2024, we wanted to highlight the amazing volunteering effort from Jacqueline Morales, one of our administrative volunteers, based in our Vancouver Welcome Centre.

Jacqueline provided hugely valuable support to our Settlement program through making calls to partner organizations, offering intepretation services for clients and staff, and translating documents.

“Jacquelin’s talent, bright energy, skills and positive approach makes  valued memberof our volunteer crew”, Elmir Ismayilov, our Volunteer Coordinator for Vancouver and Richmond, explains. Jacqueline’s dedication, professionalism, time-management and eagerness has helped make her an exceptional volunteer!

For Jacquline the most rewarding part of volunteering has been helping others and “to do something meaningful for someone else without expectations of getting something in return.” This generosity and compassionate approach to her volunteering work has meant she’s been crucial in welcoming and supporting many of our Settlement clients.

Jacqueline played a key role as a mentor for other newcomers. This is another valuable role our volunteers play at ISSofBC as they can share their experiences and the challenges they faced when they first arrived and offer inspiration to newcomers on what is possible when settling in British Columbia.

Through volunteering, Jacqueline has also learnt about Canadian work culture and how to use her professional experience in the Canadian context, “I have learned many things professionally and personally but I’ll say that social skills, communication skills, mentoring skills and English skills have been the most useful experience for me.”

Thank you Jacqueline for all your work and congratulations for being selected as our Volunteer of the Month!
