Hundreds of women and girls including ISSofBC staff, clients and friends were given the chance to learn about aviation last weekend at The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too!
The free event took place at the Langley Regional Airport on Women of Aviation Worldwide Week (WOAW), and on International Women’s Day Saturday, March 8.
From 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. young girls were encouraged to ride in a helicopter, explore aircraft, meet the crews and hopefully be encouraged to pursue a career in aviation.
“It was very well attended and neither the long waits nor the rains deterred the attendees from enjoying the experience of flying in a small aircraft or a helicopter for the first time,” said Ana Marie Caday Volunteer Connections Facilitator in Langley.
Booths were set-up by organizations including BCIT Aerospace department, UFV Airplane Structures, YVR, Canadian Museum of Flight, Air Cadets and the RCMP.
WOAW is a global outreach initiative centered around International Women’s Day that promotes the advancement of women in the aviation and aerospace industries.
According to the Government of Canada, the percentage of women in aviation and aerospace is low. Less than two per cent are aircraft maintenance engineers, less than six per cent are commercial pilots, and less than three per cent of the Royal Canadian Air Force are women.
