A new web-based text messaging tool developed by ISSofBC and the Vancouver Community Network offers real-time information sharing with refugees and immigrants via cell phone to help ease the transition newcomers face as they navigate services in their new communities.

The multilingual tool, available through newcomer.info, helps reduce communication challenges particularly with clients who face language barriers or are unable to seek in-person services.

Newcomer.info also improves workflow of service providers by reducing staff stress from repetitive questioning and in office line-ups. The tool is also designed to receive messages to allow senders to analyze concerns circulating in the client community and quickly respond with accurate information.

Newcomer.info is a pay-as-you-go service where users purchase credits to send messages. Users can create multiple lists based on language preference, age, gender or service needs.

The Canadian-based, confidential tool is now available nationwide to immigrant and refugee serving organizations.
