ISSofBC has been recognized once again as one of this year’s Best Workplaces in Canada, joining 49 other companies nationwide that made it to this year’s list in the medium company size category.

This is ISSofBC’s seventh such award, and the fifth in a row since 2010. The first two awards were received in 2007 and 2009. This year’s list, and related stories, appeared in a special national report published in The Globe and Mail’s April 17, 2014 issue.

ISSofBC was one of eight BC-based organizations, and one of only two social services organizations nationwide, to make it to this year’s list. “Becoming a great workplace does not happen by accident,” said Jen Wetherow, director of Great Place to Work® in Canada, in a Globe and Mail article accompanying the list. “At its core, a great workplace culture is all about relationships (and) requires a shift in perspective where everyday tasks, often seen as obligations, become opportunities to build trust between managers and employees.”

“This year’s award comes at the heels of yet another significant and profound change in the funding environment that has challenged our capacity and requires that all of you make major adjustments in service delivery and accountability,” said Patricia Woroch, ISSofBC’s CEO, in a message to staff. “As you all have always done, you have embraced the new organizational priorities, and with the usual display of resilience, dedication and commitment, we are moving forward.”

“I stand in admiration of each and every one of you for your steadfast loyalty to ISSofBC despite the many shifts and changes. And despite the challenges we face, you do your work with excellence, with a deep commitment to your clients and with grace,” Woroch added.

The list of Best Workplaces in Canada is compiled annually by Great Place to Work® Institute Canada. “There’s only one way to get on this list – and that’s if your employees put you there,” said Wetherow. All of the organizations on the 2014 list were assessed using an employee survey, called the Trust Index, which measures workplaces according to credibility, respect and fairness, as well as pride and camaraderie.

Globally, the survey represents the voices of over 11 million employees, including approximately 300,000 from Canada alone.
