What is an offside, a power play and the penalty box? These were some of the questions answered during a Hockey 101 class and multicultural hockey night hosted by ISSofBC in Coquitlam.
The lesson, conducted by J.A. Michie, Senior Marketing Associate of the Coquitlam Express Junior “A” hockey team, included rules of the game, an equipment check and even an in-class practice session with sticks, pucks and helmets.
The class was part of the preparations for a multicultural hockey night on November 21 when the Coquitlam Express took on the Chilliwack Chiefs at the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex.
Armed with a new understanding of the game, over 45 ISSofBC LINC students, volunteers and their families showed up to cheer on the Coquitlam team.
“Most of the students brought their handouts to compare what they learned and familiarize themselves about what the different lines on the ice represent. They also really enjoyed watching the Zamboni machine during intermission,” said Elsie Decena, ISSofBC Volunteer Connections Facilitator in Coquitlam.
The Coquitlam Express beat the Chiliwack Chiefs 3 – 1.
