November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. On this day, people around the world speak out against violence and support women who need help.
Many women in Canada experience violence at home or in relationships. Newcomer women can face more challenges because of:
- Limited English
- No family or friends in Canada
- Concern about immigration status
- Not knowing their rights
- Not knowing where to get help
But you are not alone, and support is available in many languages in British Columbia.
What is violence?
Violence can be:
- Hitting, pushing, or hurting someone
- Threats or shouting
- Controlling money or documents
- Not allowing someone to leave the home
- Forced sex or unwanted touching
All of these are against the law in Canada. You have the right to be safe, no matter your immigration status.
How can ISSofBC support you?
Our Newcomer Women Support program offers free, private help for immigrant and refugee women who are experiencing violence or feel unsafe.
ISSofBC can help with:
- Someone to talk to
- Safety planning
- Information about your rights
- Sharing of useful information in many languages
- Connections to shelters, housing, and health services
For additional support, such as legal aid or police assistance, our program staff can provide referrals.
