Building confidence at tax time: Supporting newcomers across BC

by

Understanding taxes in Canada can feel confusing, especially for newcomers filing for the first time.

At ISSofBC, our tax clinics take place each year across Metro Vancouver. Through these clinics, newcomers learn how the tax system works and complete their tax returns in a clear and supportive environment.

This work is about more than forms

It is about building confidence, knowledge, and independence.

Our volunteers take time to explain each step, so clients can better understand their responsibilities and benefits in Canada.

💬 What our clients say:

“Thanks to the volunteers for not only doing my taxes but explaining how it works and helping me understand and navigate the overall tax process in Canada.”

– Lovewell Kristoferson, GAR from Ghana, first-time tax filer in Canada

“I came back to ISS to do my taxes because everyone is so kind and helpful and answered my questions. Last year was my first time filing, and now it’s my second year. They explain everything to me. Thank you for helping me.”

– Semhar Tigrinya, second-year tax filer

At ISSofBC, we are proud to create spaces where newcomers can learn, ask questions, and feel more confident navigating life in Canada.
