Celebrating seniors for a resilient future

October 1 marked National Seniors Day in Canada, a time to highlight the vital contributions older adults make to our communities and to remind us all of the importance of supporting them. Seniors bring a wealth of generational wisdom, lived experience, resilience, and joy to our lives, and often play a vital role in the lives of newcomer families, especially those living in multi-generational homes.

We were proud to celebrate the conclusion of our recent 8-week initiative, Empowering Seniors for a Resilient Future, delivered through our New Horizons Program for Seniors.

This program supported older adult newcomers in building their digital and practical life skills, preparing for climate-related emergencies, and improving their mental and physical well-being through creative arts and yoga.

Just as importantly, it offered participants the chance to build friendships, practice English, and feel part of a caring community.

“I learned how to keep my health in yoga, how to search on Google, and improved my English. I also met many friends in this program.”

For many, this experience was transformative. Kacy, a newcomer from China, shared:

“My experience is great. I enjoyed the program very much. I learned how to exercise through yoga, how to use Google Maps, and I met many new friends from different countries.”

Others found the program to be a source of confidence and joy. Wenner reflected:

“The Senior Program helped me learn how to exercise, keep healthy—including mental health—manage my money, and know Canadian seniors’ life. I met a lot of friends from all over the world and improved my English speaking and listening.”

Yolanda expressed how the program helped her overcome fears and connect with others:

“I really enjoyed spending time with people from different nationalities, practicing English, and losing my fear of speaking. The presenters’ topics were excellent, especially on mental health and brain health. Thank you to all the volunteers for your kindness.”

These voices highlight why National Seniors Day is so important. Supporting seniors goes beyond providing services—it’s about empowerment, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

Programs like New Horizons ensure that older adults not only gain new skills but also find spaces where they are valued and where their resilience and curiosity can continue to flourish.

As Mario summed up so simply and powerfully:

“The only way to be satisfied in life is to do what needs to be done. ISSofBC’s experience has been grateful for my wife and me. We need more time—it is so short.”

On this National Seniors Day, we celebrate the strength, kindness, and wisdom of our seniors. At ISSofBC, we remain committed to ensuring every older adult has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
