Intersectionality is the idea that people have many different identities—such as culture, language, gender, religion, ability, and immigration status—that can overlap and shape their experiences in society. These combined identities can influence the opportunities people have and the challenges they may face. In a diverse society, understanding intersectionality helps us recognize that each person’s story is unique. It encourages empathy, inclusion, and fairness by reminding us to consider the different parts of people’s identities and experiences.
