It is with deep sadness and profound sympathy that ISSofBC extends our heartfelt condolences to the Ismaili community on the passing of His Highness the Aga Khan.
His connection to Canada was cemented when the nation, under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, took in thousands of Ismaili refugees who were abruptly expelled from Uganda in 1972.
He was a beacon of wisdom, compassion, and leadership who touched the lives of so many around the world, and his loss is felt deeply by all who were privileged to witness his lifelong commitment to the betterment of humanity.
ISSofBC has had a historic connection with His Highness and the Ismaili community that he led. The main reason for our creation over 50 years as BC’s first immigrant-serving agency was in response to the Ugandan refugee crisis in 1972. At that time our founders worked tirelessly to welcome over 1,600 Asian Ugandans to Canada, many of whom still live here today.
As a result, His Highness’s unwavering dedication to the principles of faith, education, and social welfare has left an indelible mark on our shared history.
As a spiritual leader, philanthropist, and visionary, his contributions to the well-being of countless individuals and communities will continue to inspire for generations to come.
