Louis’s refugee journey to Canada began in Kenya, where he left his home country in search of safety, support, and the chance to live without fear. His journey took him to Uganda, then Zambia, and finally to Canada.
Life in both Kenya and Uganda was very difficult for Louis because of his sexual orientation. He faced discrimination, danger, and serious challenges because of who he is. With support from the United Nations, he was eventually able to move to Zambia.
In Zambia, Louis lived in a camp with around 40 other refugees from countries including Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. Life was not easy, but people supported one another through difficult times.
Food supplies were stored in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. Members of Muslim and Catholic communities would sometimes visit the camp and bring food, especially during holidays and special occasions such as New Year. These acts of kindness gave people comfort and hope.
The United Nations also encouraged Louis and others by reminding them that they were not alone. Many people around the world, including people from Iran and Afghanistan, were also searching for safety and a better future.
At times, life in Zambia was frightening. Louis remembers one terrible incident when a fire broke out in the camp. Police arrived and beat people because they believed someone in the group had started the fire. The experience left many people feeling scared and unsafe.
After years of uncertainty and hardship, Louis finally arrived in Canada on May 7. For the first time in a long while, he felt a sense of peace. Now, after more than a week in Canada, he says he is beginning to “see the light.”
After such a long journey, Louis finally feels that he has found safety and hope for the future.
