International Literacy Day: How learning English opens doors for newcomers in Canada

Every year on September 8, UNESCO marks International Literacy Day, recognizing the importance of literacy in building more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable societies.

For newcomers to Canada, literacy can take on an additional meaning. Learning and strengthening English skills can make everyday life easier, build confidence, and open new opportunities at work, in education, and in the community.

Building confidence through language

Learning English is about much more than vocabulary and grammar. Stronger language skills can help newcomers communicate with neighbours and colleagues, understand important information, access services, participate in their communities, and feel more confident navigating life in Canada.

At ISSofBC, we support newcomers and other learners at different stages of their English-learning journey.

Through our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program, eligible newcomers can access free English classes designed to develop practical language skills for living, working, and participating in Canadian society.

ISS Language and Career College of BC (LCC) also offers English language courses for learners looking to strengthen their communication skills for everyday, academic, or professional goals.

Literacy opens doors

International Literacy Day is an opportunity to recognize that literacy and language skills can create pathways to greater independence, connection, and opportunity.

Whether you are beginning your English-learning journey or looking to take your skills further, there are options available to help you reach your goals.
