Stories of Learning and Hope

From Journalism to Marketing: A Career Paths Program’s Success Story

In 2020, Hamid Jafari arrived in Canada from Iran, holding a bachelor’s degree and boasting 10 years of experience as a journalist. Upon discovering ISSofBC, Jafari, initially feeling disheartened in his job search as a freelance journalist, sought secure employment in Canada, leveraging his valuable Canadian experience in the field. ISSofBC welcomed him warmly, acknowledging that he was their first journalist client seeking suitable employment.

Our ISSofBC Career Paths’ team can assist newcomers with credential evaluations and obtaining BC licenses, regulatory body, and association memberships, skills and course funding, job search support, work placement opportunities, connections to BC employers, access to BC mentors, and more. Understanding the unique challenges and opportunities faced by the client, the Career Strategist, part of the program’s team, meticulously tailored Jafari resume and cover letter. As Hamid began applying for jobs, the Employment Relations Strategist, also part of the team, advised exploring opportunities in the marketing industry, aligning with his background in journalism and marketing communication from Iran. This strategic direction proved effective as he transitioned smoothly from journalism to a marketing role in Canada.

“During the process of preparing my action plan, the ISSofBC Career Paths Case Manager was fully aware of the different aspects of my challenges and opportunities. I also noticed the same level of attention to detail when working on my resume and cover letter with the Creative Team Lead. When I began applying for jobs, the Employee Relations Strategist provided clear guidance, suggesting I explore opportunities in the marketing industry”.

The action plan developed by ISSofBC played a pivotal role in his success, guiding him through structured, goal-oriented steps. He provided weekly reports to his Career Strategist detailing networking efforts, meeting feedback, and participation in professional associations. The consistent feedback and encouragement he received bolstered his optimism and motivation.

Through his proactive engagement with ISSofBC’s Career Paths program, Hamid Jafari successfully transitioned into a Marketing Expert role at Ayoub’s Dry Fruits and Nuts, showcasing how his journalism expertise translated seamlessly into marketing success.
