Newcomers needing legal help can soon seek support from the ISSofBC Immigrant and Refugee Legal Clinic at the ISSofBC Welcome Centre in Vancouver at no cost, BC Attorney General David Eby announced today. Services are expected to roll out next month in April.
ISSofBC received a $250,000 grant to hire lawyers and legal staff to offer legal advice and advocacy for clients. “These funds allow ISSofBC to expand its work in support of newcomers to B.C. as they navigate the immigration system,” said Eby. The Law Foundation of BC will provide coaching, tools and support to enhance the services provided by the legal clinic.
“We have seen how devastating cuts to legal aid services can be to the most vulnerable British Columbians,” said Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, who attended the announcement event. “That’s why we’ve taken action to reverse that history.”
“Clients receiving the legal help they need in a timely and consistent manner will go a long way towards facilitating their integration into Canadian society,” said ISSofBC CEO Patricia Woroch.
