Job seekers take notice – the jobs you are looking for are not often placed on bulletin boards or websites.
The employment market can be difficult to navigate, and often times your best opportunities won’t be in plain sight. This is where being familiar with the “Hidden Job Market” can help you stay ahead of your competition when aiming for a new role.
The ISSofBC Settlement-Employment Team, led by Jennifer York, provided an in-depth presentation on the Hidden Job Market, and how job seekers could make the most of their professional networks to find out about job opportunities not made known to the general public.
The Settlement-Employment Team had a great turnout for the event at the Vancouver Public Library Central Branch (VPL) Thursday, July 17. The event space was at capacity, with 60 attendees who learned about what the Hidden Job Market is, and how to start engaging in networking activities. Many participants even started networking with each other afterwards.
“It was very useful for a new immigrant. It was my first time hearing this concept,” wrote one of the attendees on an evaluation form. “It helped us to understand the Canadian job market and how to improve our networking.”
One newcomer also developed an appreciation for the VPL as a resource: “By attending workshops like this, I can learn a lot more useful information and I really like the place at VPL.”
