ISSofBC’s Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program (LINC) has gone live with over 25 blended online and in-class courses across the Lower Mainland, and two full-time online classes that serve the Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
For the last few years ISSofBC LINC staff have been building, testing, and piloting blended classes for language learners in both the LINC CLB 1-8 and LINC for Employment programs using an open-source learning management system called Moodle.
“With a long history of providing support services for newcomers, ISSofBC is always committed to providing exceptional service that has become a national standard for other providers to aspire to. In this age of media, it is the same story again,” said Paul Carter, ISSofBC Online Resource Developer.
Moodle, an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, is a cutting edge set of learner-centric tools that empower the teacher and client in a collaborative, online learning process. This learning environment benefits language acquisition by allowing learners to practice their English from home or anywhere there is wifi, come to class ready to put their learning to practice, engage with the content and community outside of school, and begin acquiring and refining their online skill set.
ISSofBC serves more newcomers than any other agency in Western Canada, reaching clients throughout Metro Vancouver, Squamish and the Okanagan. Now with the power of Moodle, ISSofBC is able to serve newcomers anywhere at anytime.

Due to an overwhelming demand, the LINC CLB 1-8 and LINC for Employment blended classes filled up in less than a week since the launch April 1, 2014.
