ISSofBC is encouraging education for refugee youth and newcomers to Canada with nine bursaries of $1,000 each.
Newcomers and refugee youth have until June 30, 2019 to apply!
Eligible applicants committed to their academic pursuits may apply for more than one bursary.
2019 ARBUTUS FINANCIAL BURSARY
Arbutus Financial provides comprehensive financial services to businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals to achieve peace of mind through financial confidence. Derrek Quon is a Partner at Arbutus Financial and understands the unique needs of the non-profit sector to protect its health and provide financial security. Derrek and his team of professionals have been involved in helping newcomers to Canada with their immigration and healthcare needs for years. Arbutus Financial established this bursary for newcomers to provide financial assistance towards their education, which will allow them to reach their career goals.
The Arbutus Financial Bursary is only available to ISSofBC present or former clients, students or volunteers (must be within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.

2019 CHERYL ANDERSON BURSARY
This bursary has been established by Cheryl Anderson in support of refugees who are seeking qualification in Canada in a health-related profession. Cheryl Anderson is a retired physician who served on the ISSofBC Board of Directors from 2004 to 2010. She dedicated much of her medical career to establishing policy and practice that promotes the health and well-being of refugees in their integration into Canadian society.
The Cheryl Anderson Bursary is only available to current or former refugee clients, students or volunteers of ISSofBC (must be within the last three years). Applicants must be pursuing education and career in the health care sector.

2019 DE JAGER VOLKENANT BURSARY
De Jager Volkenant provides a comprehensive range of legal services to meet the special needs of charities and not-for-profit organizations and to help each organization achieve its unique purposes. Their experienced team of lawyers and staff understand the challenges faced by not-for-profit profit sector clients which are often dependent upon volunteers with limited time and resources. The company established this bursary to assist newcomers in furthering their academic goals to pursue a career in the legal sector.
The De Jager Volkenant Bursary is only available to ISSofBC present or former clients, students or volunteers (must be within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.

2019 JIM SIEMENS BURSARY
This bursary is in honour of Jim Siemens for his 13 years of service in the ISSofBC Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP). During his time with ISSofBC, he worked with compassion and determination to give resettled refugee youth and newcomers the best possible start in Canada.
The ISSofBC Jim Siemens Bursary is only available to present or former Refugee Youth who are legally entitled to attend school in Canada and may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.

2019 MARIAN DEWITT BURSARY
This bursary honours Marian Dewitt, a long serving ISSofBC Board Member since 1982 for her outstanding contribution to the immigrant community and to the development of Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia.
The Marian Dewitt Bursary is only available to ISSofBC present or former clients, students or volunteers (must be within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.

2019 MICHAEL DANCHUCK BURSARY
Michael Danchuk, a financial consultant with Investors Group, has been a strong supporter of varied community initiatives and has actively contributed his time, energy and resources in furthering the goals of these initiatives. He established this bursary as part of his commitment to helping newcomers settle in Canada.
The Michael Danchuck Bursary is only available to ISSofBC present or former clients, students or volunteers (must be within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.

2019 PIETRO WIDMER & RENEE VAN HALM BURSARY
Pietro Widmer grew up and completed his studies in Electrical Engineering in Switzerland and immigrated to Canada in the mid-seventies. He has twenty years experience in project and operation management and is now dedicating significant time to volunteering including a leading role with pm-volunteers.org.
Renee Van Halm grew up in Vancouver after emigrating from Holland with her parents in the early 50s. She is a practicing visual artist with work in major public, private and corporate collections across the country including the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Her most recent solo exhibition called Nudge was held at the Equinox Gallery in Vancouver.

2019 PRITAM SINGH & BEANT KAUR BENNING BURSARY
The family of Pritam Singh & Beant Kaur Benning have set up this bursary to help newcomers to Canada, just as they helped their family set up roots. Pritam and Beant moved from Punjab, India to London, England in the early 1960s and then to Vancouver, Canada in the early 1980s. They moved across two continents, experienced cultural barriers and persevered to give their children and future generations of their family better lives. Their family –which includes seven children and 19 grandchildren – have created this bursary to honour their memory and help newcomers in their journeys through post-secondary education.Purpose: To enable transition to educational or professional certification, transfer of credentials or pursuit of degree or diploma programs at accredited institutions in BC.

Purpose: To enable transition to educational or professional certification, transfer of credentials or pursuit of degree or diploma programs at accredited institutions in BC.
