Celebrating Chinese New Year in British Columbia: A Guide for Newcomers

If you are a newcomer, we are happy to welcome you to our community. One of the most important celebrations in the region is Chinese New Year, a very meaningful festival to many from Chinese cultural backgrounds.

Here we share Chinese New Year celebrations, the events, and how to become part of the local community. We believe in welcoming newcomers from all cultures, and we hope these events will help you feel more at home.

What is Chinese New Year?

Based on the lunar calendar, every year it is connected to one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac with the year 2025 as the Year of the Snake. This holiday is a time for family reunions, special food, music, and celebrations that last for several days. It is also a time to honour their ancestors and share good wishes for the new year.
