When Sumir arrived in Canada from India in March 2026, he brought a master’s degree in pharmacy and five years of professional experience in clinical research and pharmacovigilance.
But starting a career in a new country came with challenges.
As a newcomer, Sumir found that his international education and experience did not always translate easily to the Canadian job market. He felt that many employers were looking for Canadian experience, making it harder to get that important first opportunity.
That’s when he connected with ISSofBC’s B-Hired program.
Through B-Hired, Sumir learned how to better present his international education and professional experience to Canadian employers. He also strengthened his resume and interview skills, developed his communication and confidence, and gained a better understanding of Canadian workplace expectations.
The preparation helped him take an important first step in his Canadian career: securing a position as a pharmacy assistant with Wellness Pharmacy Group.
The role is giving Sumir valuable Canadian work experience and an opportunity to learn more about the local healthcare and workplace environment as he continues working toward his longer-term career goals in pharmacy.
“I am very grateful to B-Hired for supporting me during this important transition in my career. My advice to other newcomers is to stay positive, keep learning, and not give up, even when the job search feels difficult.”
For Sumir, starting again in a new country has meant adapting his experience, learning a new job market, and continuing to move forward.
“With the right support, preparation, and persistence, you can take the first step toward building a successful career in Canada.”
