From Goalkeeper to Newcomer: Jose’s Story of Football, Focus, and Building a Future in Canada

As Vancouver prepares to welcome the FIFA World Cup 2026, newcomers are sharing what the beautiful game means to them.

For Jose Eduardo Velasquez Ochoa, football is more than a sport. It is part of his story, his discipline, and the mindset that continues to guide him as he builds his future in Canada.

Jose came to Vancouver from Ecuador at the age of 19. Since childhood, he had dreamed of studying in Canada. His father had studied here years before, and that experience became one of Jose’s greatest motivations.

“I came to Vancouver at 19 to follow a dream I had since childhood. My father studied in Canada years ago, and his experience became my greatest motivation.”

Arriving alone in a new country was a big step. For Jose, it meant adjusting to a new environment, building academic English, and staying focused on long-term goals.

But he says he knew this was the path he needed to take.

“I was never afraid to live in a new country by myself because I knew this was the necessary path to reach my goals.”

What football taught me

Before coming to Canada, Jose was a goalkeeper in the youth divisions of a professional football team in Ecuador.

That experience shaped how he approaches challenges today.

“I was a goalkeeper in the youth divisions of a professional football team in Ecuador. That experience taught me discipline, patience, and how to stay focused under pressure.”

For Jose, the lessons from football did not stay on the field. They became part of how he studies, plans, and moves forward in Canada.

He is working to improve his academic English, preparing for technical certifications such as AWS, and pursuing a future in computer science.

“Football taught me to stay focused, even when people underestimated me. That mindset still guides me today.”

The beautiful game and newcomer stories

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will bring global attention to Vancouver and to the power of football to connect people across languages, cultures, and communities.

For many newcomers, football can be a first friendship, a shared language, or a reminder of home. For others, it can be a place to build confidence and belonging.

Jose’s story is one example of how the beautiful game can shape a person’s journey — from the field to the classroom, and from a childhood dream to a new beginning in Canada.
