Israel’s journey in Canada and the importance of accessibility

From May 31 to June 6, Canadians across the country are recognizing National AccessAbility Week — a time to celebrate the contributions of persons with disabilities and reflect on how we can build more inclusive and accessible communities for everyone.

This year’s theme, “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada,” reminds us that accessibility is not only about physical spaces. It is also about dignity, belonging, opportunity, and the feeling of being treated equally.

For Israel, that feeling made all the difference.

When he arrived in Canada, Israel faced the challenge of adapting to a new country while navigating barriers that many people with disabilities continue to experience every day. But through support, inclusion, and community, he found opportunities to rebuild his confidence and pursue a new chapter in his life.

What stood out most to him was not pity or special treatment — it was respect.

“They made me feel equal.”

Those words reflect something powerful: true inclusion happens when people are recognized for their strengths, talents, and potential.

Throughout the week, organizations and communities across Canada will participate in events, conversations, and initiatives that promote accessibility and disability inclusion. On June 3, Canadians are also encouraged to participate in Red Shirt Day by wearing red to show support for persons with disabilities and to share a commitment to inclusion.

At ISSofBC, we believe newcomers of all abilities deserve the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and feel a sense of belonging in Canada.
