ISSofBC partnered with 25 agencies, organizations and institutions, all committed to building a welcoming community for immigrants and refugees living in Surrey, BC.
Community members, employers, institutions and other immigrant serving organizations collaborated under the Surrey Welcoming and Communities Project on a number of initiatives including creating a refugee myth busting campaign.
As BC’s largest recipient of refugees, Surrey faces an urgent challenge to change misconceptions about who refugees really are, why they are in Canada, and how they relate to our community.
Starting with findings from refugee focus groups, the project leaders developed print and online resources, created and delivered training sessions, produced public exhibitions of refugee culture, and brought to light more realistic and positive stories about the refugee experience.
