What we do

HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) is a free service that provides you with:

  • weekly in-home or virtual support and training from a Home Visitor
  • children’s books and lesson kits to teach your child at home
  • access to group meetings and talks based on your interests and needs
  • individualized information, orientation support, and referrals

SMART (Supporting Mothers And Raising Toddlers) is a free play-based program that provides you with:

  • weekly in-home or virtual support and training from a Home Visitor
  • high-quality toys to help your child achieve their developmental milestones
  • activity cards to help you play with your child
  • access to group meetings and talks based on your interests and needs

HIPPY Plus helps you:

  • bond with your child
  • teach your toddler or preschooler at home
  • develop skills to support your children
  • prepare your child to enter and succeed in kindergarten
  • gain English skills
  • meet new people
  • gain confidence as a parent
  • find resources to help you and your family succeed
You can join if you are:
  • immigrant or refugee parent with a child aged 1 ½, 2, 3, or 4 years old
  • willing to spend time at home with your child to practise and learn, using materials provided
Locations Available

Activities

  • spend 15-20 minutes per day with your child, using materials provided by the Home Visitors
  • monthly group meetings to network with other parents and learn valuable information
  • opportunity to apply and become a HIPPY Home Visitor to gain employment skills

ISSofBC is currently the only multicultural HIPPY provider on mainland BC. In 2021, so far the HIPPY Plus Program has supported approximately 130 families from 20 countries who spoke more than 17 languages.
