Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Q: I would like to volunteer my time to support newcomer Afghan refugees. Why are you not currently accepting volunteer applications?
A: Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us. While Canada has welcomed several thousand Afghan’s to date, only a very small number have come to BC. ISSofBC has been outreaching for specific targeted volunteers (e.g., Dari speakers) while also finding appropriate ways to engage Canadian veterans. When the need arises for additional volunteers, we’ll promote recruitment opportunities on our website and social media.
Q: I have furniture, second-hand clothing and other gently used household items to donate. Can I drop off these donations at one of ISSofBC’s offices to be distributed to Afghan refugee families?
A: Unfortunately, ISSofBC does not have the capacity to accept material donations of any kind. Instead, if you would like to donate, consider purchasing gift cards we distribute to newcomer refugee families to buy essential items they need. If you would like to donate a gift card – click here.
Q: I donated a gift card. Where does the gift card go? How do I know it was donated?
A: Gift cards will be given out to high-needs families on a periodic basis. By giving families gift cards, we empower them to pick items they need and choose, which are culturally appropriate.
Q: I have a room in my house I can rent to a newcomer refugee on a short-term basis.
A: At this time, we’re looking to secure long-term rental housing for newcomer Afghan families. If you’re aware of permanent housing possibilities within Metro Vancouver, please submit your information by completing this form.
Q: Is there any other way I can help?
A: There are many ways to help. Educate yourself on the situation in Afghanistan, understand the culture of the Afghan people and build awareness in your community of friends and family about what is happening and why Afghan refugees are arriving to Canada. Combating misinformation, xenophobia and racism towards newcomer refugee groups is also a way to support this cause. You can learn more here. While we await information on the opportunity to privately sponsor Afghan refugees, you can also make a financial contribution towards our private sponsorship program – click here.
