Program Goal:

To provide support, friendship, and assistance to new immigrants/refugees to help ease their adjustment to Canada.

Objectives:

  • To be a Resource Person who assists newcomers to learn about different aspects of life in Canada
  • To be an Explorer who is interested in learning about newcomers’ culture and language
  • To be a Friend who provides friendship and support to newcomers
  • To be an Initiator who takes the lead to develop a connection with the newcomer and maintains contact each week

Responsibilities:

  • To meet once per week for a six month period with a newcomer
  • To welcome newcomers to Canada and connect them to their community
  • To communicate monthly with Program Staff, and to report your volunteer hours

Desired Qualifications:

  • A willingness to learn and appreciate the cultural practices of others
  • A desire to help others
  • Reliability and responsibility
  • Fluent in Arabic
  • Some knowledge of services and resources available in Burnaby and surrounding areas

Time Commitment:

Flexible, approximately 3 hours a week from July 15, 2018 to October 15, 2018

Support:

  • Ongoing support and assistance is provided by the Program Staff
  • We provide orientation, training and support for volunteers
