Goal:

To provide small groups of same language refugee newcomers with assistance in learning basic spoken English skills within their first 6-8 months of arrival in Canada with the goal of increasing the newcomers’ ability to communicate basic needs of shopping, answering the phone etc.

Duties:

  • Provide instruction to groups and/or individuals in English as a Second Language (ESL);
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans and activities and based on resources provided and your own ideas (different topics: food, weather, education, etc.);
  • Schedule and attend tutoring sessions with newcomers, and encourage their continued studies;
  • Communicate regularly with ISS staff to provide program feedback as well as to report your volunteer hours.

Skills:

  • A strong desire to help others
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; i.e., patient, social, kind and encouraging when interacting with the learners;
  • Fluent in English, both written and oral
  • Willing and able to commit to tutoring sessions once a week for a minimum of
    3-4 months or as agreed upon with staff;
  • Enjoy working within an ESL environment and have a sincere desire to help newcomers to Canada;
  • A working knowledge of community programs, services and resources;
  • Interested in meeting people from different cultures and sharing experiences on an individual or group level;
  • Open to new ideas, friendly and sociable;
  • Flexible and able to handle a certain amount of stress and ambiguity;

Commitment:

2 to 4 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months
