Eligible applicants committed to their academic pursuits may apply for up to 15 bursaries with one application but only eligible to receive one award. Arbutus Financial Services Bursary – $5,000

Arbutus Financial provides comprehensive financial services to businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals to achieve peace of mind through financial confidence. Derrek Quon is a Partner at Arbutus Financial and understands the unique needs of the non-profit sector to protect its health and provide financial security. Derrek and his team of professionals have been involved in helping newcomers to Canada with their immigration and healthcare needs for years. Arbutus Financial established this bursary for newcomers to provide financial assistance towards their education, which will allow them to reach their career goals.

The Arbutus Financial Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


CEO Bursary – $2,500

The CEO Bursary supports a newcomer who is pursuing a career in a field that supports the wellbeing of communities (e.g. healthcare, social services, community leadership etc.) and is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


De Jager Volkenant Bursary – $5,000

De Jager Volkenant provides a comprehensive range of legal services to meet the special needs of charities and not-for-profit organizations and to help each organization achieve its unique purposes. Their experienced team of lawyers and staff understand the challenges faced by not-for-profit profit sector clients which are often dependent upon volunteers with limited time and resources. The company established this bursary to assist newcomers in furthering their academic goals to pursue a career in the legal sector.

The De Jager Volkenant Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Dr. She and Dr. Chan Bursary
(2 bursaries, each one is $2,500)

Dr. Andrew Chan came to Canada in 1972 and obtained his Dentistry degree from University of Toronto.

Dr. Elaine She came to Canada in 1974 and obtained her Dentistry degree from University of British Columbia.

Both are retired now, and are enjoying lots of traveling, as well as golfing, hiking and volunteering in between.

The bursary serves as a mean to welcome and support refugees who are seeking a better future in Canada through education. It is eligible for any sectors of education.

The Dr. She and Dr. Chan Bursary is available to current or former refugee clients (Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers of ISSofBC (within the last three years).


Goldbeck Recruiting Bursary – $2,500

The Goldbeck Recruiting Bursary was created in honour of the invaluable contributions made by newcomers, both past and present, to Canadian society. We are honoured to offer this token of support in order to empower both the education and employment of Canadian immigrants.

The Goldbeck Recruiting Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Lower Mainland Urgent, Family & Primary Care Centres Bursary – $2,500

This bursary is sponsored by Vince and Amy Sara, owners of three medical clinics in the Lower Mainland. Vince and Amy have long been supporters of newcomers and their clinics focus on providing healthcare services to newcomers.

The Lower Mainland Urgent, Family & Primary Care Centres Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue a career in the healthcare industry.


Michael Danchuk Bursary – $2,500

Michael Danchuk, a financial consultant with Investors Group, has been a strong supporter of varied community initiatives and has actively contributed his time, energy and resources in furthering the goals of these initiatives. He established this bursary as part of his commitment to helping newcomers settle in Canada.

The Michael Danchuck Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Millennium Development Group Bursary – $5,000

The purpose of the Millennium Development Group Bursary is to provide aid to newcomers to Canada in order to help them adjust to their new environment, feel at home here while obtaining the skills and education necessary to thrive and make a positive contribution to the country.

The Millennium Development Group Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Patricia Woroch Bursary – $5,000

The Patricia Woroch Bursary has been established to support newcomers who are pursuing post-secondary education in a field of their choice. Patricia is the retired CEO of ISSofBC, having served in that role for 24 years.

Patricia is a strong supporter of a number of community organizations and currently serves on three boards of directors in addition to supporting various charitable initiatives. This bursary is part of her commitment to helping newcomers in their integration into Canadian society.

The Patricia Woroch Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Pietro Widmer Bursary – $5,000

Pietro Widmer grew up and completed his studies in Electrical Engineering in Switzerland and immigrated to Canada in the mid-seventies. He has twenty years experience in project and operation management and is now dedicating significant time to volunteering including a leading role with pm-volunteers.org.

The Pietro Widmer is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Renée Van Halm Bursary – $5,000

Renée Van Halm grew up in Vancouver after emigrating from Holland with her parents in the early 50s. She is a practicing visual artist with work in major public, private and corporate collections across the country including the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Her most recent solo exhibition called Nudge was held at the Equinox Gallery in Vancouver.

The Renée Van Halm Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


The Roper Greyell LLP Bursary – $5,000

Roper Greyell LLP is the largest employment and labour law firm in Western Canada, serving clients in virtually every sector of the economy, including some of the largest and most sophisticated private and public sector employers in British Columbia and across Canada. We are proud to be a supporter of ISSofBC and are pleased to be sponsoring The Roper Greyell LLP Bursary. This Bursary will be awarded to a newcomer to BC who is pursuing a career in the legal field.

The Roper Greyell LLP Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Volunteers Bursary – $2,500

The Volunteers Bursary is supported by donors from our volunteer community of ISSofBC. The Volunteer Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.


Wolfgang Strigel Bursary – $5,000

Wolfgang Strigel grew up in Munich, Germany. In the mid-seventies, he relocated to Montreal to complete a M.Sc. in Computer Science at McGill. He worked for 15 years in software development, completed an MBA degree at SFU and started two software companies. Since selling his companies in 2007, he volunteered as a mentor for over 60 companies in Canada and internationally.

The Wolfgang Strigel Bursary is available to current or former ISSofBC clients (immigrants, Government-Assisted or Convention Refugees), students or volunteers (within the last three years) who may require financial assistance to pursue their chosen course of studies.
