Gaining local experience while pursuing further credentials was one of the key messages expressed by a panel of accounting and finance professionals during a Richmond Library employability workshop sponsored by ISSofBC.

Richmond library patrons and ISSofBC clients seeking to expand their job search and explore careers in banking and finance, attended the panel with industry insiders from Canadian Western Bank (CWB) and Accountemps – the Temporary division of Robert Half Professional Finance & Accounting.

Panelists included Ivy Ma, Senior Manager of Retail Banking at CWB; Maritess Gaerlan, Senior Credit Officer of Retail Banking at CWB; and David Xie, Staffing Manager at Accountemps.

Ma and Gaerlan both shared information on the structure, departments and processes at CWB, as well as the current employment opportunities.

Xie encouraged job seekers to strongly consider temporary accounting opportunities to obtain local experience. He also expressed the importance of developing skills while pursuing further credentials.

He said he has been able to assist clients with transferable skills from other backgrounds to transition into accounting positions.

This event, on April 25, was part of a joint initiative between ISSofBC and the Richmond Public Library-Brighouse Branch.

The seminars run every Thursdays from April to June. The next workshop, on May 23, focuses on preparing participants for their first Canadian work experience.
