The ISSofBC’s LINC Program utilizes current technology trends contributing to the dynamic classroom environment to improve language learning. Classes at different levels have access to:

Online/ Blended Learning through MoodleLINC

afternoon and evening classes from CLB 4 to 8 have access to the ISSofBC Online Learning Site. Each class has its own online learning course taught by the students’ own teacher. Each week there are new listening, reading and writing activities on the topic being studied in class which are monitored or marked by the teacher. Along with lots of English practice, students also get individual feedback from the teacher on their skills.

EPortfolios

Students in LINC for Employment CLB 7/8 create ePortfolios as part of their classroom and blended learning. An ePortfolio is a dynamic, interactive social media resume allowing students to showcase their skills and accomplishments to employers. A typical ePortfolio includes an audio or video introduction, visuals of the job seeker’s qualifications such as degrees, training certificates, and awards, brief descriptions of past employment, and photos or videos highlighting past or current projects. An ePortfolio helps students stand out to employers – and find work!

SMART Boards

Many ISSofBC LINC classes are equipped with touch screen whiteboards called SMART boards. SMART boards allow teachers to create interactive digital lessons where students can manipulate words and images to help them learn. SMART boards can also interact with learning applications which let students send answers to the board or let the teacher know if they understand the lesson or need more help.

SMART Board Presentations

ISSofBC LINC students toured their community while documenting their surroundings with digital cameras then uploaded their pictures to the class SMART board and made creative, colourful presentations. The SMART board is an effective teaching tool bringing more audio visual elements into language learning.

Digital Cameras and Voice Recorders

All ISSofBC LINC classes have access to digital cameras and voice recorders. With a digital still camera, teachers create Photo Stories of class events or field trips for students to describe and practice language. Digital video cameras and voice recorders allow students to capture and review their dialogues and presentations to improve their speaking and pronunciation, and also provide teachers with a record of students’ skills for evaluation and feedback. Capturing pictures, videos and audio recordings connects students’ learning to their real life experiences, and makes language learning meaningful.

Online Learning through Janis’ ESL Website

On Janis’ ESL Website, ISSofBC LINC students at all CLB levels have access to videos and English language learning lessons related to the monthly topics being learned in class. There are also links to other ESL activities on the internet for extra practice. Some lessons are available for free to anyone in the community, while others are only available to ISSofBC LINC students with a password.

Computer/ Mobile Labs

All ISSofBC LINC sites are equipped with computer labs or mobile labs for students. In a computer or mobile lab, students learn English at their own pace with English language learning software. They also have opportunity to do internet research, create presentations and write assignments.
